Glycerin can be divided into natural glycerin, also called saponified glycerin, which is made from natural oils and fats, and synthetic glycerin, which is made from propylene, due to different production methods. Saponified glycerin is of better quality than other glycerin and has a wide range of uses, mainly as follows

1. Used as anticold agent for liquid fuel in airplane and automobile.

2. Used as a brightener for cellophane and a plasticizer for coated processed paper in the papermaking industry.

3. As surfactant raw materials, toothpaste, cosmetics, important moisturizing agent

4. Moisturizing agent for leather, textiles, etc., and moisturizing agent to keep tobacco in cigarettes.

5. Raw material for edible flavor and plasticizer.

6. Used in the manufacture of glycerol trinitrate smokeless gunpowder, nitroglycerin alkyd resins and ester gums.

The specific classification of glycerin is: industrial grade, cosmetic grade, food grade, drug grade (divided into drug auxiliary and drug main), four grades.

Industrial grade usually refers to GB 13206 in the second grade glycerin, 95% content of pharmaceutical-grade glycerin impurities in glycerin requirements are higher, there are diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol limit requirements, and the production of pharmaceutical-grade glycerin need to obtain GMP certificate. The standard of food grade glycerin is a bit vague at present, usually GB13206 is also adopted.

Crude glycerin generally refers to glycerin with less than 93% glycerin content. It is generally used for refining to produce high purity glycerin such as 95%, 98% and 99.5%. Refined glycerin is a general term, according to the different sources of refined glycerin production is divided into saponified glycerin, hydrolyzed glycerin and refined glycerin. Refined glycerin generally refers to cosmetic grade 99.5% glycerin, which is USP grade glycerin.

General glycerin refers to 95 concentration of glycerin, generally used in industry, can not be used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and food industry, of course, refined glycerin can also be used as a good food-grade glycerin, used in the food industry, but also better as a drug-grade glycerin, used in pharmaceuticals.
